Data Slate Volume 1

When getting planet-side, I helped get Michael’s slot (agility drugs) past customs.

Meeting with Titus Carro, the noble who called the inquisition:

·         Titus is a minor sea lord with combat experience who lives in the northern spire of hive city.

·         Putricine and Cadaverine were found in the air of the penthouse of Titus Carro.

·         Young people were killed and found in seemingly advanced states of decay.

·         Captain Partheos is on the case.

·         Carro knows Valentino Croshanko was also slain.  All in decrepit fashion.

·         Titus’s son Peter was found near shipyards, mid-hive.  He did socialize with people would be around there, so it’s not entirely odd that he was found there.

·         Titus promises his influence and forces to our cause should we call on him via vox.

Meeting with Theodore Croshanko:

·         Same chemicals, maybe ask.

·         Valentina was discovered about the same time.

·         Similar shipyard to Peter.

·         We promised to include him if he would like.

·         Theodore thinks that it was the Eagle Cartel.

Discussion with Captain Partheos:

·         He’s willing to accept help of the nobility.

  • All bodies have been gambling addicts, set in posture of repose, advanced state of decomposition (sincere).  Found mostly in underhive, midhive near coasts…. Geographically clustered but not temporal clustering (there are a few places where lots of bodies found)

  • Bodies died in position found in….some faces in extreme pain, some happy….lotus pose has happy face, crossed arms has pain face…no geographical pattern.  50/50 distribution of poses

  • Body count: 83 (9 nobility) — all in past year

  • Eagle cartel: Also appeared in past couple of years… suspects connection is likely, but no evidence (very secretive/capable).  Probably involved in weapons smuggling and artifact smuggling

In shipyards:

  • Some of the dock workers have conspicuously well-crafted firearms.

  • Tells us location of gun seller…and we have his gun

  • Kevin attempted to disarm him, but failed and the gun went off (on camera)

  • Michael ran off to pursue a shady witness — followed him into a warehouse room

  • We apprehended and drugged the potential Eagle Cartel member.

  • Janie and Kevin ran off to follow Michael, listen through the door: Witness talks to someone on vox and says “I think they’re onto us, I think I’m being followed…come get me”

  •

FIGHT!!!

  • Us vs. 4 little dudes and 1 big dude.  We have two hostages, more guns, and a big axe.  We are recovering while out at sea on Titus Carro’s boat.  We’ll begin investigation next morning after leaving two suspects to freak out overnight

  • We then successfully made it look like a deal gone bad

DAY 2:

  • Question one of the dudes: Who should we ransom for you? Louie Altmon

  • Drug the dude (- will answer anything

    • Helped catch a highborn once, “free brothers” do the killing

    • Gets paid A LOT to help with this

    • Shows gun — nobody can make/afford this!

    • No one knows how Free Bros get their money

    • Targets = “who owes them money”

    • How sign up? “They choose you”

    • Saw free brothers once – western peninsula

    • Croshanko kid – caught her - find them when they’re alone, 10-12 gang up, expect to be ransomed

    • Runs guns and stuff

    • Free Brothers hire a lot of gun runners + other gangs

    • Louie Altman = boss….known him forever, brought him into the gang….has a “tank”… big dude, does not wield an axe, nice shotgun with dot sights/grox ivory handle — got it as a gift from the Free Brothers

    • “Free Brothers” — want independence, want democracy, eagle with single head — think Imperium will fall apart.  Think will be good for everybody.

    • Still likes the Emperor, but does it for the money

    • Is member of Eagle Cartel, one of many hired by Free Brothers

    • Free Brothers a few years old

    • Doesn’t know anything about death culty stuff

  • Kevin smokes with the locals

    • Apparently he looks like a Crog tribal

    • A few of them in the city — Wayland’s point (smaller city on mainland), few on west side

  • Talk with Titus Carro – give him the other hostage

  • Examine weapon – manufactured on Nexum (penal colony in same sector) – inspection marks show was processed for distribution to IG on Port Aquila (got “lost” after inspection)… Enginseer at Port Aquila would most likely have been responsible.

  • Don’t tell anyone about this finding

  • Go to tank:

    • See all security cameras…we’re seen

    • Find security guards

    • See guy in alleyway smoking watching everyone who walks in

      • Clearly trying to look like “no one”… does have blue bandana around neck

    • Interior: very crowded, pall of smoke

      • See few other dudes with blue bandanas observing crowd without drinking, there’s also other overt security personnel

      • We look a little out of place, but not horrible

    • Get taken to Louie

      • Notice he has some common visible cybernetic implants (obvious bionic eye, bionic left hand, uncertain quality),

      • has notable blue accessories (same shade as bandanas),

      • complexion is odd — fairly pale, but lips stained black, veins prominent that are jet black → some very rare drugs from this planet can cause these stains (some do red/purple/black…black = hallucinogen)

    • Look at weapon (pump action shotgun)

      • Has same manufacturing and legion markings as others seen

      • Also has lots of customizations: red dot sight, personalized grip, fine-tuned for use (reliable red dot sight, custom grip quality)

      • Loaded

    • We make a good estimate on its worth — he won’t sell it to us, but appreciates our knowledge

    • We make a deal to take out a competitor who’s been supposedly rigging fights and he’ll put us in the room with the guy who gave him the gun

    • Go to guy’s shack

      • Got one crappy gun within reach, another guy sitting in a chair who’s armed, money probably under the desk

      • Kill both, make it look like a murder-suicide

    • Show Louie the video, he’s pleased — be here tomorrow night

    • Stay at Titus’s overnight

  • We arm up — Janie and Zach conceal their guns, Kevin and Michael don’t

  • Taken to meeting

    • Dude we meet: wealthily dressed, blue/white/red bandanas (FREEDOM!), comes from higher breeding (not noble, but higher class than might have expected), has air of educated person, is armed, similar skin stains, but purple ones

    • Him, his retinue (sim dress, less wealthily) = 2 others, Louie, Louie’s guard

    • Charm him with talk of freedom!

    • Willing to sell some decent weapons (not top quality, though)

    • Try to fish for info about how to be a Free Brother… there is greed in his voice

    • We bribe him, he will probably get us into a meeting

  • We watch him leave (after getting stuff from the car)

    • They get into their car, we follow in ours

    • They pull up to a large ship — see ship’s name: the Annabella

      • They’re not planning on leaving right away….make sure that our noble friends keep a dinghy nearby with backup

  • We all get concealed weapons

  • Get on board, servo skull is recording

    • Place is well-crewed (lots of people)

    • Told to wait midship for first meeting where will be indoctrinated (all of us)

    • Brought into hall (~30 people), listen to ship’s captain (obviously a regular old freedom-lover) and chaplain

    • Chaplain is WEIRD looking:

      • Extremely tall and emaciated, riddled with black and purple stains

      • Speech to crew: acknowledging and welcoming fresh blood

      • Sermon: while imperium has served man well, no denying the Emperor is long dead, imperium on verge of decaying into nothing — why should we struggle to keep it alive when we should be keeping ourselves alive?  Yadda yadda don’t tread on me.

    • Chaplain approaches us and asks us how dedicated we are….

    • Go on 2-day journey… arrive in port at Wayland’s rest

    • On this land, we can create our own society!

    • Lots freedom folks, lots drug staining, lots tribals (many drug-tinted, but mostly purple and red and green — not black tinted)

      • Red = stronger and faster

      • Green = better senses

      • Purple = better thinking

      • Black = shamans only; brings them closer to the Great Chief

    • There will be an assembly!  We’ll go

    • Silver Snake Tribe is attacking another tribe that these guys are friendly with (skirmish) — they’re upset.  Local tribe is planning a counter attack once can gather warriors

  • ASSEMBLY!

    • Gather in great hall — people well funded (“alarmingly so”)

    • Speech: Chaplain + finely dressed “leaders”

      • Same as before at beginning — no reason to follow Imperium

      • We could have self-determination and freedom, liberty

      • More overt calls for secession

      • Call to recruit in Revolutionary Army

    • Someone approaches tech priest – wants modifications to my gun

      • Discover marking of a hammerhead shark – This symbol was present at both of the noble residences we visited

  • Leave the area, more speeches going on

    • Grab some pamphlets (paper not imported)

      • Notable catchphrases: Everywhere men are born free, yet everywhere we see them in chains, This is our independence day,

      • Call for armed revolution against imperium and against the nobility

      • Names some founding fathers (some alive, some dead) – Benedict Galerian (he’s here) = “Senator”

        • Fantastically wealthy dress (bling, guns, etc)

        • Aspires to be a general and president

        • True believer

        • No drug traces

      • Peaceful coexistence w/ Bloodfoot Tribe (the local tribe) is one of his big planks of his platform

    • We hear of upcoming elections for representatives!

  • Kevin talks to senator

    • He notices Kevin’s not part of the tribe, but communicating is difficult — if you can get support of the tribes, you will have a place in my cabinet

    • Tells us who to talk to to find him

  • Mostly wealthy and educated people are taking pamphlets (are literate)… some people are comparing books! (by intellectuals, etc)

    • We meet an intellectual fellow — he offers us a relatively worn-out copy

      • Over 200 years old, not from this planet

      • Has been well-stored

      • Notes from previous owners in margins, including relatively new reference to Senator Galerian’s ideas

      • Also have spectral analysis of chemicals in book

    • We get his political support!  Hooray!

  • Bloodfoots believe that the Silver Snakes have a hidden temple

  • Bloodfoot leader = Garm = basically Conan the Barbarian

  • Travel by day – 4 of us, Garm, 10 lackeys (laslocks, pistols, spears, clubs)

  • Find some traps on journey — they’re getting denser as we get closer

    • I point them out, Garm appreciates it :)  MPGA!

  • See faint glimmer of campfire ahead …. There are 20 of them, 15 of us

  • RAID!  We win and got FANTASTIC FOOTAGE of Cratos the Greatest killing off big baddy

  • Search the bodies:

    • Covered in ritual scars — now know what their tribe’s ritual scarring looks like

    • Garm’s tribe uses sharpened seashells, this tribe uses obsidian

    • Big baddy: Armor and clothes are not heretical……

  • Ride in cart back: Get attacked, fend them off

  • Come back to town

    • Octavious and Dom get healed at hospital

    • Karroleen makes fancy propaganda video

    • Cratos gets tailored furs and toupee

    • Find a bullhorn and a laudhailer

  • Next day:

    • Octavious writes speech

    • Karroleen reads democracy book

  • Cratos’s Political Opponent: Kythor Estokos (Estokos Sucks the Most!)

    • Message of freedom, unity, national identity — planet of own imperium

    • People watching at their rally: Find an impressionable fan, could potentially be convinced to make an assassination attempt — seems to be a slaught addict….

    • A lot of Estokos’s advisors (and himself) have black veins

  • Convince Estokos supporter to shoot blanks at Cratos….he does, we behead him and start a mob (and get rid of the evidence of the other blank bullets)….we calm them down

  • Go to Estokos mob and start a one-on-one battle between Cratos and Estokos

  • We lose….notice his chainsword is artifact quality — TECH HERESY — i wants it

  • We spread a rumor that Cratos came to the battle already wounded, lost honorably, incite suspicion about Estokos being so well-trained when he’s a scholar

  • Everyone stays back:

    • Cratos does grassroots recruitment

    • Dom and Octavius dig up dirt on Estokos

  • Everyone gains +850 experience

  • Since last time:

    • Working for Galerian:

      • We know many names + some rough info from his inner circle

      • He “rolls deep” with the scholars behind this political revolution

    • Estokos’s speeches have gotten more religiously tinged — trying to get supporters to move support away from the Emperor…. Refers to our “Holy Father who embraces us all”

  • We go on jungle expedition with Garm to beat the other tribes

    • We ask if we can get some of the black drug if we help him!  He says yes!  He will also try to get us to be a “clan friend”, etc.

  • We go south with a large party, relatively deep into Hidden Temple lands They’re in the middle of a migration period

    • We find all of their traps!

    • We set up an ambush around one of their traps — we set off their trap using one of their crappy warriors (Durr)

    • We all hide except Cratos (who is being filmed standing there)

    • 5 Hidden Temple warriors come on the scene — point weapons at Cratos, he begins to lay down his truncheons

    • FIGHT! We really really win, give Durr extra cloak — now his friend!

  • Get two captives (flunkies), interrogate one of them

    • Temple is in foothills

    • His wife’s name is Krea

    • Guides usually take people to the temple — they don’t live with the main tribe, but leaders know how to contact guides

    • Flunkies get taken back to beach head

  • We travel on with Garm without getting accosted

  • Find the trail of the wanderers — ambush them!  And fight some of them and get some captives, then get away to encampment of Bloodfoots

  • Garm and shaman gives us a black drug and takes us to sweat lodge

    • Drug = organically complex — many psychoactive ingredients + numerous compounds that are unidentifiable…. Is slightly cooler to touch than it should be, flecked with many colors that fade in and out of visibility, but is overall black (like looking into the night sky)

    • Cratos takes the drug!! Gets vision #2: Find self in cave.  A living putrid mound of rotting flesh in a corner concocting something.  Woman is captive in corner weeping.  See hive of nammu, decayed as if war has come upon it.  From depths rise a Kraken, eagle soars above it (single-headed) picking the flesh of everything the kraken kills.  Death is all around you, comes from the mountains and the depths of the sea.

    • Cratos’s veins have grown a little darker

  • Cratos’s account of his vision

    • In a garden with giant titan creature.  People handing fruit, eating it, handing it to elf-like creature (pointy ears, pretty) in a cage, elf (she) was weeping. Titan presiding over everything

    • Then second vision of hive nammu being crushed by a kraken that came out of the sea.  And a white viper who challenges the kraken and loses.

  • Use logic test on that vision:

    • White viper is clear image of silver snakes (been fighting them for a while)

    • Kraken indicates that snakes working on the side of the imperium

    • Separatists are in some way working towards the destruction of hive nammu and the planet as we know it (not just working towards freedom)

    • No real reason to understand anything from first vision yet……..has something to do with a heretical cult that is also working towards the destruction of the world (probably connected to the separatists)…. Cult is a subset of the separatists

      • Titan might be “father” that estokos has been referring to

    • DO NOT TELL ANYONE IN INQUISITION THAT HE HAD THAT VISION

  • Raid was a success — have support of Bloodfoots in the election!

  • Decide to question the captives

    • Talk to elderly man: defiant, wise in bearing: Baird

    • Show him sketch of a kraken: his face curls in disgust — it’s a destroyer, said to come one day, only the “Great Chief” (Emperor) can defeat it

    • We flash our Inquisitor badge — he looks surprised, then pensive

    • To earn his trust, need to bring him Garm’s head or kiill shaman

  • We decide to kill shaman by framing Durr

    • Steal some red inkfruit (frenzy fruit) — 3 doses’ worth

    • Durr takes 2 doses of the red stuff, slices the head off the shaman

    • Cratos checks in and engages in combat, Karroleen takes a picture, starts screaming, Domhal comes in and kills Durr point-blank, we blame Durr, Garm believes us!!

  • We go back to Baird and show him the photo — ask him to take us to the Temple, he believes we work for the “High Chief”

  • We tell Garm we are off to go campaigning, we get to keep Baird

  • He takes us to the Silver Snakes — he advises us when we arrive to keep our weapons sheathed and to be respectful, we show off our Inquisitory symbols, etc.

  • Silver snake encampment:

    • Simple fortifications, well fortified for what it is — lots of soldiers, people in the trees

    • We say a prayer for Durr, since he died for the Imperium

    • The don’t like us (give us stink eye), but they let us in

      • A few recognize us, but they respect the protection of Baird

    • We show off the picture of the killed shaman

  • Camp’s leader comes to speak to us

    • He mostly believes us, will talk to matrons

  • We do some people watching

    • They worship emperor, Bloodfoots and dark tribes worship of their cult for as long as they remember (timeless struggle)

    • Kraken comes from the dead waters (a bay across the mountains, is the holy equivalent of the hidden temple)

    • They are definitely true worshipers of the Emperor

    • Dark tribes refer to “god” as “Our Father” (could be the Kraken?) = same guy that Estokos has been talking about

    • They believe black fruit, while useful, is dangerous — has lead bad people down a dark path

  • Matrons have decided that we’ll be taken to the temple under guard, will be able to speak to leaders of good people

    • We’ll be blindfolded, taken into the mountains along the cliffs, travel along the cliffs for a couple of days

    • They don’t realize Karroleen’s mechadendrite can see….so Karroleen keeps track of where we’re going the whole time → able to make a map

    • Octavious learns some basic Piscera Primitive language

  • We arrive at Hidden Temple!

    • It’s resplendent, very faithful to Imperium (double eagles) — Shaolin monk aesthetic

    • Lots of stairs, we take level of fatigue (except Karroleen because she has mechanical legs)

    • Temple: Some inscriptions in high gothic.  Was clearly built by more technologically advanced people

  • Led to great hall — see a wizened man (older than Baird)

    • Lots of traps/defenses — we will die if we try anything

    • High chief speaks to us: Recognizes Inquisitorial symbols

    • We tell him a brief version of our story

  • Black ink fruits are grown out of weird dead bodies (the ones we were initially sent to investigate)

    • Can be made from a willing body (someone who is dying anyway)

    • They always make it from bodies of unwilling, they seem to be making more and more every day

  • He talks to old matron (pick up words “tree” “river” “dangerous”) — they sound worried about everybody’s safety

  • They know one of the locations of the ink fruit orchards…. Too dangerous to attack it directly (too well defended)

  • See room in temple with ancient and unused electronics (door says “vox”)

    • We see a vox caster — fixed with holy machine oil!

    • Make contact with Titus

      • Killings have continued, seem to be happening more frequently

      • We tell him we know why the killings are happening, but that we can’t tell him what (it’s heretical)

      • He’ll keep forces on standby

    • Also tell Partheos and his crew to look for people with black veins

  • We ask about the significance of the elf and the titan

    • There are tales from long ago about elf people (faster, beautiful) — they came looking for lost treasures, but left empty handed

    • Titan = vision of the dark one’s Father

  • Find a library → find an ancient journal = data slate

    • Data slate contains journals of early explorer (Magos Explorator Varn = tech priest who looks for lost technology) from when planet was first brought back into the Imperium

    • See descriptions of many places we have heard about (including maps) → our explorations will be much easier, and we know more about some of the traditional culture!!

    • We copy this into our data slate (but data slate is getting full!)

    • Mentions a temple upriver of dark waters → xenos artifacts?  Dangerous, ruined temple

      • Could be reached by riverboat or helicopter?

  • Black drug orchard and dark temple w/ artifacts are in the same place!!!

  • Decide to hike to orchard/dark temple to FRUIT and LOOT

    • Get supplies (4 weeks of food, 2 space llamas) and a guide (Sven) from the silver snakes’ leader

    • See a lone hunter in a valley

    • Go hunting (catch a goat!), catch hunter’s attention, he approaches

  • Sven helps us talk with hunter person

    • He’s one of the crag-dwellers — mostly keep to themselves, but somewhat financially involved with Bloodfoots

    • He shows us places where Bloodfoots stop on the trail

  • We continue on, get stalked by animals (scargalls) — we crush them

    • Skargauls = space barnacle bats → sign that there has been a spacecraft landing sometime in the area

  • Proceed to Blackfoot encampment → see a small band of Blackfoot traders

    • They recognize Cratos!

    • Estokos has brought a lot of trade to the tribe, they are grateful (but he’s probably a cheater!)

    • Estokos is taking a short trip to a “monastery” before the election (i.e., the dark temple we’re going to)

  • Go to the monastery

    • Few pack animals outside — also a covered wagon with Estokos’ symbols plus other separatist/Bloodfoot symbols

    • There are also 6 guards stationed outside

  • We enter the monastery

    • Made of a slightly reflective dark volcanic stone

    • Notice same chemical residues from black ink fruit in the air

    • Also see presence of byproducts of bodily decomposition process (putrescene and cadaverine)

    • Also see some high-gothic inscriptions on walls referring to “our father who embraces us in death”

    • 4 guards inside (seem well-trained)(have lasguns)…there are probably more

  • Ask to see high priest, he’s been in a meeting with Estokos for hours

  • Explore main areas and guest quarters

    • There is a large library (with lots of OLD books)

      • Not very well organized, but there are 2 shamans around who seem to know their way around

      • Get a low gothic → primitive dictionary

      • Some books standard for imperium, others are dark and mystical and stuff

      • Find out that skargauls came with seapeoples thousands of years ago

    • Less technological relics than hidden temple

    • Dormitory area with estokos and Bloodfoot men

    • Praying rooms — round, dark, single small trough with dagger (for self bloodletting)

  • As browsing in library, shaman and Estokos enter library

    • Estokos notices black in the veins — he seems pleased (maybe Cratos isn’t so useless after all)

    • All of shaman’s veins are pure black (even his irises)

  • Private chat with Estokos

    • Cratos offers to drop out of race and endorse Estokos in return for getting us introductions to higher-ups

    • Will seal the deal with black ink fruit visions, great shaman Paracelsus will officiate

  • Domhal sneaks around and finds the armoury — gets some guns

  • Karroleen reads heretical texts — increases subtlety

  • Ceremony:

    • Courtyard lined by ink fruit trees of every variety (and lots of people)

    • Dark moat surrounds central platform lined by 4 black ink fruit trees

    • Cratos and Estokos both eat ink fruit

      • Cratos is Entering covenant of friendship, entering a family :)

      • Both of them collapse on the platform to have their visions

      • Octavious has film of Estokos taking drug and Paracelsus’s face

  • We note that Paracelsus is the reigning religious figure in this temple, which is the main temple in the land

  • See handful (4) of high shaman’s attendants slink off to far end of orchard and enter a cellar

  • Domhal sneaks after them and takes a peek inside: See them go down a dark hallway into a room lined with books — see them operating a strange device (mildly luminescent object studded with small red gems), not sure how they’re doing it…. They’re chanting in a language unknown to Domhal

  • Cogs the servo-skull takes good video without being noticed

  • Various of the gems seem to illuminate and then fade with time

  • Their chanting aligns with the shaman’s chanting, seems to be controlling things

  • Octavious goes down and joins them

    • Ritual binds them in friendship

    • Chanting has elements of high gothic, but not easy to understand…definitely heretical

    • Priest dude says it helps them communicate with the spirit world (the dead and other beings in a spirit world)… the spirits bring us together and make our souls one

    • Octavious joins them: struggles to learn chant….learns just enough, puts his hands on the device and feels a warm fuzzy connection with the others, some level of mind-melding and learns a bit about them

      • One of them comes from one of the noble houses on hive Nammu — he’s one of the disappeared (same name as planetary governor)

  • Everyone wakes up!

  • Cratos sees Estokos somewhat as he saw him in his vision — they’re “bros” now

    • They were in weird dystopian future together

    • There was a book, and Estokos wrote Cratos’s name in it

    • Everything was great until Octavious’s face showed up

  • Cratos catches Octavious and Karroleen up — Octavious realizes that the device was the book itself — and the ink fruit helps you slip between the materium and the immaterium

  • Octavious takes Cratos and all the priests on an Aristotelian chat

  • One priest heads down to the cellar

  • We steal the device, get out, and deliver the device to the Inquisitor

    • Btw, the shaman was an evil creature thing that released warp stuff (scary)

    • Also, Estokos is missing

    • We get some time off….but this heresy has probably spread across the galaxy
